Even before the world became a volatile place, fashion had already begun signalling for a return towards more sensible trends.
Gone are the unflattering bike shorts and the strange thong sandals, and in place, a moodboard of elegant clothing and shoes that can transcend seasons and last a lifetime. That has never felt truer than in the resurgence of the loafer.
Once a favourite shoe of the Jackie O-aspirants and the geek-chic crowd, loafers have made a strong return in SS20, as designers from Lanvin to Prada explored the classic shape in their own vocabulary.
Perhaps it’s the clean and simple shape of the loafer, or the fact that wearing a pair lets the world know that you embody a sense of timelessness and refinement, but the loafer’s popularity carried it forward into Pre-Fall 2020. Marni’s slip-ons were paired with maxi dresses, and Tory Burch’s ode to Americana included several iterations of the block-heeled loafer.
As shoppers continue to avoid temperamental trends, whilst seeking out pieces that provide more bang for their buck, we’re predicting that the loafer is here to stay for a while.
