There’s a new kid on the block, and its name is Bobby.
Joining Dior’s repertoire of leather bags, the Bobby bag draws the inspiration for its name from a quote written by Monsieur Dior himself. In his memoirs, the house’s founder always had one look named after his beloved canine companion Bobby.
“Each collection contained a suit earmarked for success called ‘Bobby’,” the couturier revealed.
Making its debut in the house’s Fall 2020 collection, the Bobby bag harks back to the half-moon satchels popularised within the fashion scene back in the ’70s.
The gentle curves of the base provide a feminine counterpoint to the sac’s structured build, and brand codes such as the ‘CD’ logo and the raised ‘30 Montaigne’ address on the back all add a subtle nod to the French maison’s heritage. What makes this bag special is that it fits into fashion’s love for all things bourgeois, where suddenly the chicest thing you could wear is a pair of elevated denim jeans with a plush striped knit. Now, that look gets completed with Dior’s Bobby bag.
The first round of Bobby bags are available in three sizes — small, medium and large. Colour-wise, expect four timeless choices of black, white, camel and a navy-blue Dior Oblique logo.
Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri has always had a Midas touch when it came to making lustworthy bags and accessories (who could forget her runaway successes with the Book tote and the 30 Montaigne front-flap handbag), and the Bobby is set to be another notch to her list of sell-out leather goods.
