Characterised by its signature floating stones ensconced between two sapphire glass crystals, Chopard’s iconic Happy Diamonds has been a symbol of happiness since 1976. In 1993, Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s Co-President, took this idea further by introducing Happy Sport, one of the first watches to combine diamonds with a stainless-steel case.

Over the last 28 years, Happy Sport has been reinterpreted in numerous breath-taking variants. Watches like Happy Fish (1998), Happy Snowflakes (2017) and the recent Happy Sport Sun, Moon & Stars (2020), are just some examples of how Chopard strives to rejuvenate the line, whilst at the same time still retaining the Happy Sport’s original identity.

This year, Chopard refreshes the collection by adding seven new references in an optimally comfortable 33 mm-diameter case (the first time this size is being offered) inspired by the ‘golden ratio’ principles of aesthetic harmony. Chopard has also equipped the watches with the manufacture Chopard 09.01-C movement, a self-winding movement that beats at 3.5Hz and has a power reserve of 42 hours. Comprising 159 components, it is decorated with Côtes de Genève stripes on the rotor and bridges, while the main plate features circular graining.

Offered in several stylish variants, there are bicoloured options featuring Lucent Steel A223 (Chopard’s lustrous and anti-allergenic steel alloy that is 50 percent harder than other steels) cases embellished with ethical rose gold; solid ethical rose gold models offered on a leather strap or metal bracelet; and a dazzling piece in a fully set white gold case and bracelet. They all have dials illuminated by the legendary dancing diamonds.

To celebrate this occasion, Chopard also introduces Happy Sport the First watch, comprising two 1,993 and 788-piece limited-edition re-releases of the original watch from 1993, complete with its mobile diamonds and “pebble-link” bracelet. Unlike their predecessors, these new watches feature the redesigned 33mm cases in Lucent Steel A223 and are driven by Chopard’s self-winding 09.01-C movement.

And who better to embody the face of the Happy Sport woman than the Hollywood star with the world’s most radiant smile? The inimitable Julia Roberts, Academy Award-winning actress and three-time Golden Globe Awards recipient, was chosen by Scheufele to be the face of the new Happy Sport collection. “It was her and nobody else! Julia Roberts was the only person I felt could convey the spirit that I see in Happy Sport,” says Scheufele.
