There are very few ladies watches that can be considered iconic, but Chopard’s Happy Sport is certainly one of them. The watch is best known for the diamonds that dance freely above the dial, safely sandwiched between two slices of sapphire crystal. When it was launched in 1993, it was also the first watch to ever combine steel—not considered a precious material in watchmaking—with diamonds.
Today, the Happy Sport has become one of the most recognisable women’s watches around. It thus comes as no surprise that luxury watch retailer The Hour Glass would want to collaborate with Chopard to create a special edition to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The Chopard & The Hour Glass 40th Anniversary Special Edition of the Happy Sport is very unique. It retains its iconic stell case, but instead of just diamonds swirling around the dial, the watch has rose gold charms in the shape of a laughing sun, moon, and stars. The moon and stars are, of course, studded with brilliant white diamonds. The watch is fun, playful, and a definite conversation starter—which is exactly what The Hour Glass intends.
The Hour Glass has dedicated itself to promoting watch culture and developing interest in horology since the opening its first boutique in 1979. Given its mission, a playful watch such as this Happy Sport would certainly pique a woman’s interest, even if they had not previously been keen on watches.
Plus, the Chopard Happy Sport is a good complement to the other watches that The Hour Glass has released as part of its year-long 40th anniversary celebrations; all of the previous releases—from Audemars Piguet, De Bethune, and Urwerk, have largely been aimed at men, so it’s lovely to see the retailer cater to its feminine clientele as well.
We can certainly see ourselves wearing this Happy Sport. The question is—would you? If the answer is yes, then you had better act fast. The watch is limited to just 50 pieces, and all previous anniversary releases from The Hour Glass sold out in a snap.
