There was much to celebrate when Chopard introduced its revamped Happy Sport collection last year. After almost 30 years and numerous interpretations, the collection welcomes a new and ultra-wearable 33mm case size inspired by the ‘golden ratio’ principles of aesthetic harmony.
The watchmaker also introduced Happy Sport the First, comprising two 1,993 and 788-piece limited-edition re-releases of the original watch from 1993, complete with its free spinning diamonds and “pebble-link” bracelet. Unlike the original, these new watches are presented in the redesigned 33mm cases in Lucent Steel A223 (Chopard’s lustrous and anti-allergenic steel alloy that is 50 percent harder than other steels) and are driven by the brand’s inhouse automatic Chopard 09.01-C movement.
And who better to front the Happy Sport campaign than the lady with the million-dollar smile? Newly appointed ambassador and Academy Award-winning actress Julia Roberts was personally selected by Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele to front the marketing campaign.
This month, two new additions join the Happy Sport collection. These limited edition pieces perfectly embody the feminine and sporty codes the collection is known for and are made in collaboration with leading watch retailer Cortina Watch for the latter’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The first is the self-winding 50-piece limited edition Happy Hearts timepiece bearing five mobile diamonds – one for each decade in Cortina Watch’s glorious 50-year heritage – and a dancing red heart. Presented in a polished stainless-steel case set with a red ruby crown, this numbered edition bears a special inscription, “Cortina Watch 50th Anniversary Since 1972”, on the exhibition caseback and is exclusively available at Cortina Watch boutiques.
Acquiring this rare timepiece also allows one the opportunity to contribute to a good cause. Net proceeds from the sale of this special edition will be donated to the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF), a non-profit charity organisation very dear to Cortina Watch founder Anthony Lim’s heart.
In Happy Moon, the second commemorative timepiece, Chopard and Cortina Watch worked together on a beautiful watch that will appeal to sophisticated female watch collectors. The sparkly ticker comes in three iterations, each presented in snow-set cases made of ethical white, yellow or rose gold. Set against iridescent dials made of aventurine glass or red mother of pearl are seven dancing diamonds jostling for attention.
In addition to the time, the watch also boasts a moonphase indicator and small seconds display. Located at the 12 o’clock position, the moonphase indicator, perhaps the most poetic of all complications, is so accurate that it will only display a mere one-day deviation from the actual lunar cycle after 122 years. As for the small seconds, it occupies a recessed position at 6 o’clock, where a diamond-set North Star that has been finished using a classic textured goldsmithing technique rotates once every minute. Such precision and attention to detail are hallmarks of Chopard’s watchmaking artistry.
Limited to five pieces in each variant, each watch is driven by the manufacture Chopard 96.25-C calibre. This self-winding movement, which is equipped with a micro-rotor, can be admired from the exhibition caseback. Imprinted on the sapphire crystal are the words “Cortina Watch 50th Anniversary Since 1972”, a commemorative inscription that reinforces the friendship between these two family-owned companies.
