Sun’s out, sunglasses on.

By now, the merits of sunglasses are common knowledge. But, just in case you need a refresher: sunglasses not only protect your precious peepers from the harmful UV rays, but they also shield the delicate skin surrounding your eyes from damaging environmental stressors that can cause premature ageing.

On top of that, a good pair of sunglasses serve you beyond just a practical accessory. It frames your face beautifully, taking years off your look. It represents your personal sense of style and tells the world a bit about you. It even serves as a shield or a signifier that you’d like to be left alone.

Now, on to the fun part. With SS20 collections hitting store racks, here’s a dive into this season’s eyewear trends.

For the women…

01 | Go Big or Go Home

As if responding to the need for ‘gram-ready sunglasses, designers are trotting out bold eyewear shapes to please and tempt. At Marc Jacobs, it’s a butterfly that wraps around the upper half of your face. 3-D flowers pop out from a pair of cat-eye shades by Dolce & Gabbana, and Gentle Monster’s lends a sci-fi edge to your look.

02 | That Seventies Show

One of SS20’s key trends is the return of the ’70s-inspired suit. Naturally, you’ll need ’70s-inspired sunglasses to match as well. Look to Prada for an oversized octagonal design that comes with sneaky stripes hidden on the inner side of the arms, or Jimmy Choo for an updated take on the cat-eye silhouette. For the ultimate “don’t talk to me” sunglasses, Max Mara’s tortoiseshell-textured shades have you covered.

03 | Sweet Dreams

Given that the mood of the season often leans towards lightness and the feeling of joy, it’s only natural to expect an array of sunglasses rendered in saccharine pastel hues. Bottega Veneta has one in a sunny marigold, while Oliver Peoples combines a deep olive with a pale shade of pink. There’s also a pair of gold-trimmed pistachio sunnies from Elie Saab.

For the men…

01 | Get Super-visored

As if taking a cue from lab technicians in safety goggles, there were more than a few visor-styled sunglasses spotted on the runways. Fendi had theirs in every shade – from olive green to bright orange – and Dolce & Gabbana rendered their version with gold mirrored lenses. Our fave? A colourless pair from Gentle Monster, with sculptural metallic rims.

02 | It’s All About Branding

As if monogram fever couldn’t get any bigger, now you can wear your favourite brand’s monogram across your face too. Fendi’s double-F, Dior’s iconic Oblique pattern and Dolce & Gabbana’s “DG” all fronted several eyewear pieces.

03 | Building Bridges

Once the eyewear of choice for suave gentlemen, the double-bridge sunglass is making its comeback again this season. Dior’s blue mirrored ones featured a second bridge cut into the lens, while Giorgio Armani had side spoilers added to his. For a classic take, Carrera has plenty of options to suit.
