We’re a week into our #circuitbreaker month and as measures continue to tighten, movement outside our homes have to be kept to the bare minimum. But what are you to do if you are craving a good loaf of sourdough bread? Short of making it yourself — and there are many an industrial baking enthusiast who are getting their hands dirty for this — here are some bakeries who are offering doorstep delivery of their fresh bakes!

01| Bread Createur

Bakers Louis Koh and Elvis Liew cut their teeth baking at places like Maison Kayser, The Providore and Jones The Grocer before they got together to open up Bread Créateur. Made from scratch using French butter and flour, and with no preservatives, their breads are hand kneaded daily. Apart from artisan breads like sourdough loaves, traditional French baguettes, and fluffy ciabattas, they also offer a range of vienoiseries that include croissants and kouign amann. Their bakery is located in the Upper Bukit Timah hood but they provide island-wide delivery, Tuesday to Sunday.

02 | Bread Yard

A local wholesale artisan bakery and cafe in Fusionopolis in Buona Vista, Bread Yard has been feeding folks their special brand of rustic breads since 2011. Merging Japanese and European baking techniques, their handcrafted breads run the gamut from sourdough rye loaves and Hokkaido brioche bread loaves to cinnamon buns and flavour cruffins.

The bakery also offers 2-month bread subscription packages where one can choose to have bread delivered to their doorstep, once or twice a month, or weekly. There is even the option for a mixed bread and pastries subscription.

03 | Firebake

Ever since Firebake opened it doors in early 2017, they’ve been a popular institution within the East Coast and Katong neighbourhood. While many diners flock here for their tasty bistro-like fare, it’s their range of woodfire baked sourdough bread made with organic flour and wild yeast, and baked onsite in their twin woodfire ovens, that are their signatures.

There are four flavours of bread: white, wholemeal, rye, and fruit (studded with organic sultanas and dried apricots). These, as well as a selection of their dishes, are available for delivery via Deliveroo or GrabFood.

04 | Mother Dough Bakery

At this halal-certified artisanal bakery along North Bridge Road, head baker Naadhira Ismail, who studied at the International Culinary Institute of New York, uses an age-old fermentation starter she brought back from New York to craft her loaves.

With an emphasis on flavour and quality ingredients, Mother Dough uses organic flour sourced from reputable, environmentally conscious grain millers. The selection of bakes here includes whole wheat sourdough, crusty baguettes, buttery croissants, whole cakes and even flatbreads. Deliveries via oddle have a flat $20 charge; orders above $150 enjoy free delivery.

05 | Nick Vina Artisan Bakery

Before Nick Chua opened Nick Vina Artisan Bakery at icon Village in Tanjong Pagar, he first started making sourdough bread for 20 years ago in a bakery in Hannover, Germany. He brought the over 80-year-old mother starter back to Singapore and has been perfecting his craft according to the local climate.

Using natural proofing techniques and preservative-free dough made of winter wheat flour as well as the starter, Chua hand makes artisan breads like wholemeal loaves, German rye breads, ciabatta, French baguettes, wholegrain breads and the like. Delivery requires a minimum $100 order, two-day advance notice, and is available Monday to Saturday.

06 | Starter Lab

Popular Bali bakery Starter Lab opened its very first overseas outpost here in Singapore at Havelock Road to much fanfare last year. The bakery specialises in American-style sourdough — lighter and less sour than its European counterpart — as consultant baker Emerson Manibo earned his chops working in restaurants in New York and renowned bakeries Tartine and Della Fattoria in California.

There are over half a dozen types of sourdough bread on offer, including rotations of unique, original creations from the baking team; signature loaves miso baguette and the rosemary lemon with sea salt are crowd favourites. During this period, Starter Lab is offering next day home deliveries at a $15 flat charge if orders are placed before 5pm the day before. Order via their Instagram account.
