Changes are in the cards for Louis Vuitton’s menswear division. After the untimely passing of former artistic director Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton men’s has been left without a creative figurehead to steer its ship. Its autumn/winter 2022 menswear collection was effectively the last to be designed by Abloh.
With the spring/summer 2023 menswear show happening soon, the maison had earlier announced that the collection has been designed by the in-house design team. It’s not unusual of course for a collection to be designed by a team while in transition — the same happened with Givenchy post-Claire Waight Keller and Lanvin post-Alber Elbaz. But rumours have already been circling on who could take over creative reins.
The top contender at present is Martine Rose. Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke was spotted at Rose’s recent spring/summer 2023 show and that caused quite a stir among the fashion community. And while Louis Vuitton’s announcement that an in-house design team has designed the spring/summer 2023 menswear collection, there’s no telling yet whether Rose (or another creative) had a hand in it. After all, that’s how Gucci’s Alessandro Michele was introduced to the world before officially assuming the role he currently holds.
What will be interesting to see, either way, is how the spring/summer 2023 menswear collection will look like. And especially how much of Abloh’s influence will remain.
